Alexa Rufty – Four Poems

Voodoo Doll

crusty needles
stab my bare hand
i tremble
with each slow injection
hands rip away my shirt
my body pinned against the bed
i scream wildly
my doll begins to sweat
silver chains defeat me
jagged blades slice my leg
tears flood my face
i whimper, “have mercy.”
she laughs with delight
i swallow her cold pistol
hear two deafening shots
and my twin bleeds cotton

**

Fire

she turns on an old Elvis record
and allows “Burning Love” to fill her lungs
as pocket-sized child
she fits like a glove
trapped behind a closet door
flames wait to devour her
her tiny feet knock down the door
smoke gushes in towards her
she sucks in black tar
ashes fly everywhere
little cinders flicker off melted photos
prickling her small cheeks
she grips her faithful teddy bear
lies face down in the flames
and counts backwards from 99

**

Leather Jacket

at an empty bus stop
this lonely man lies
with warped fingers and warped toes
he shakes his cup with a grunt
jingle, jingle, jingle–
an oversized jacket
exposes filthy hands
under a rusted bench
someone stops and spits
we laugh hysterically

**

Untouchable

thumbs thrust my chin up,
flushed cheeks still sting.
dirty hands squeeze my throat,
i am becoming untouchable.
sleeves sliced in two,
bruised wrist bleed through.
giant fingers twist my arm,
i am becoming untouchable.
red handprints burn my leg,
i am used and untouchable.
