Sue Ellis – Four Poems

Yuletide Blessing

May substitute eggnog keep your veins free from plaque
Tiny hooves on the rooftop leave the shingles intact

May the plums in your pudding be saucy and sweet
Your serving of turkey be mostly white meat

May your walnut shell snow tires be scratchy and rough
And the sum of your blessings considered enough

Run And Take Cover

Yonder Ho Ho Santerclast
Comes smokin’ down der valley fast
Flinging gew-gaws from his sled
Stuff we do not need instead

Drives like furry maniac
Beard crammed into anorak
Makes der little childern run
Cloppin’ Reindeers Nogginstun

No Peeking

If there’s no “x” in Christmas, and no Santa Claus
In the name of Kris Kringle, who’s breaking those laws?

An imposter is wearing a red coat and britches
Talking to children and granting their wishes
I saw him, by jingle, right there at the mall
Fooling the mommies and daddies and all

The readerboard sign at the hockey rink blinks
Merry Xmas . . . Merry Xmas . . . And here’s what I think …
This season provides a misspeller or thrice
Who think that an “x” can spell kisses or Christ

Let’s string em’ up! (those xmas tree lights)
And turn a blind eye to the holiday vice
Those madcap mispellers, the Santa suit dwellers
And people who peek at their presents

You Do?

Oh alright, I admit it, I peek at mine too

**

Snowfall

Softly down the snowflakes drift
And generous, they leave their gift
Not winter wears a new white coat
Pine boughs on her lapel

Wake up! Wake up! The stillness speaks
At midnight, shaken from my sleep
I rise to lift the curtain back
To gaze outside in wonder

Heightened senses strain to hear
Then see the Christmas promise there
Renewal lays across the land
In opalescent slumber
