Perhaps You Missed It

Jeremy Deal – Three Poems

Southern Legitimacy Statement:

Well, I’d have to think a spell about what makes me Southern… Let’s see – well, my mom’s name is Terri Lou. It is not Tarry Lou, because when she was a child she was not disfigured by boiling macadam in a horrible road maintenance accident – but, if you came to my Grandmamma’s house on Easter, you’d hear a whole lot of Tarry Lou-ing. Also? Go Panthers! Oh yes, we may be rebuilding, but that Superbowl win is on the way now that Jake Delhomme’s out the door, you just wait – and when they win it? When they win that first Superbowl, you mark my words – I will toast them with a big tall glass of Cheerwine, and it will be refreshing.

Ethan Sigmon – Two Poems

Southern Legitimacy Statement:

Well, I can’t say that I’ve ever really had to legitimize my southern heritage; although, I have gotten the occasional look from the snaggletooth lady in the sweaty grey shirt at the rusty Shell station across the street for wearing my jeans too tight. But, hey, it’s hot here in the summers, so why not cut the legs off of them? After all, I’ll probably wear them out, anyways, going on countless adventures through Wilson’s Creek or making five hour drives to the beach at 12 in the morning. Or maybe it’ll be the bike rides down through the woods to the watering hole in the nearby creek that does it, coming home with briars in my socks or sandals, just like when I was a kid. Though I try a pretty rancid attempt at proper grammar, but still occasionally slipping a y’all or a was/were combination, I know the only proper anything I’ll ever learn out of all of this is to make the most of what you got. Oh, and how to properly dress for “sundy” morning church.

Bethea Buchanan – Three Poems

Southern Legitimacy Statement:

I eat Livermush—even after reading the ingredients and figuring out exactly what it is made of. I like to be barefoot in the summer, and if I can see my breath it’s too cold to be outside. We named our dog Dixie, I’ve lived in a trailer all my life, and I can make a mean fried apple pie. Sometimes I like a little iced tea in my sugar, and everything tastes better deep fried.
